“Dusk from Above”

The spill of light on the Fox River’s path
Descends upstream with seasons in transition
As I took myself to a perfect position from above
To capture this juxtaposition of balance between
a myriad of thoughts
of what was gained, of what was lost
Yes, the light was leaving this sun-painted sky
just as the chlorophyll departs on this deciduous tree
that i’m orbiting around from what was found up here
and i’m losing myself to the tranquility of it all
as these days become cooler-
as the leaves begin to fall
with this dusk from above…

“February’s First Day”

The irony of hues for this month to truly choose what winter was supposed to greet us with was long overdue and welcomed just the same. The midwest’s first blanket of snow was here to show that the feeling for revealing the appreciation for the change of seasons could simply be in the here and now. With burning birch tree embers from an open fireplace nearby, I stared through that window and never questioned why but rather when. When would this day return because it is this day when anyone would learn what winter joy could bring….

“Rolling Hills of Hues”

The thrills that come with these rolling hills of hues during an afternoon where the sun remains absent and yet the echoes of its warmth emanate with peace became the memory I’d keep close for more than a little while. I’d climb to reach a summit view that few would afford the time of day for. And this site would play in my mind forever more as I would wonder what else these fall colors bring. From the surreal detail of trees closest to me, these treasures of autumn would have me in a gaze that seemed to dismiss space and time altogether. And it would prove best not to forget the silhouette of mountains dancing with the horizon that had no defining ending- for there could only be more on the other side. Each inhale of the brisk air followed with an exhale of intention to harmonize with the heartbeat inside me. And then it became clear that I was nowhere else but here- so far away from yesterday with no expectations for tomorrow. And these were the thrills that come with these rolling hills of hues during an afternoon where the sun remains absent and yet the echoes of its warmth emanate with peace to become the memory I’d keep close for more than a little while.

A season where one may watch an exhale of breath if he or she wants to. A reason to pause as snow flakes fall that give personality to an otherwise grey day. There are reflections both outside and inside that I can see with an unclouded clarity- for I have learned once again to slow down as life is meant to be savored. The taste of memories is sweet with emotions and the spring will be coming soon. And this warmth comes with greater appreciation as those icicles form while all I saw was winter’s frozen tear…

An enduring winter was washed away when April’s showers did not stay beyond a little while. Perhaps a spring would have to share its season and forego the smooth segway that our childhood stories spoke of. There rested on the window the downpour from the day before as the morning light showered upon the trees now budding with their first leaves of the year. Perhaps it was unsurprising to those neighboring evergreens that could never relate to. And yet for any oak or birch tree, this was a sight not only to see, but to savor. And so I looked within and wondered what season my heart was in- if it was ready to reclaim the joy that lay dormant from blankets of apparel that could only serve as a surrogate to true warmth from the once frigid weather. This fresh canvas of spring leaves was greeting me, and then I knew that my joy was reborn after these rainy days…
