A season where one may watch an exhale of breath if he or she wants to. A reason to pause as snow flakes fall that give personality to an otherwise grey day. There are reflections both outside and inside that I can see with an unclouded clarity- for I have learned once again to slow down as life is meant to be savored. The taste of memories is sweet with emotions and the spring will be coming soon. And this warmth comes with greater appreciation as those icicles form while all I saw was winter’s frozen tear…

Standing on the Prairie Path to feel direction to this winter morning of a pale, white sky, I held my breath and thought I’d try to take notice of this view without the momentary exhale to unveil the vitality of it all. So many footprints coming and going, some with a purpose, and many not knowing when to stop and see what it truly is to be free. Have I walked in those shoes before? Have I forgotten to take notice of an open door? And perhaps if I knock, you’ll understand, and you’ll wear your shoes, and we’ll go hand in hand, together…

I found myself driving on Paradise Valley Road while making my way back to Illinois from Yellowstone & the Grand Tetons. Another reason to be proud of a nation such as ours is the history and endless variations of scenery while driving cross country. And what could be more fitting than to come across a patriotic mailbox where the colors could not have been more outstanding? It was worth the time to pause and embrace this view while remembering, with gratitude, what freedom feels like in a union of 50 states. The thunder in the distance sounded like a marching percussion ricochet hailing a storm either coming or going- I could not tell. And if it were to rain, I would welcome those tears from the clouds- in admiration for our Flag on Paradise Valley Road…

The painted memory of this place becomes my perspective to reflect on among the rapid thoughts that race through me just as the ripples on the river danced with shivers that I felt that day. But it was not because of the cold air mixed with intervals of temporary warmth traveling with the geysers greeting us on this September morning. I was alone with my competing thoughts fighting for focus and attention- similar to an unending cloudscape compelling the water to surface its presence with sound. And even the trees served as bystanders of nature’s elements- better to be brushed away with strokes of indifference yet a necessary reference to what stood before me. And each breath I took seemed to flow… sometimes in the shape of the passing fog, and other times the sky itself. My agitation came with each inhale of fresh air… because I was really there- present in a moment where my soul struggled to show itself if only for a brief moment- before my soul’s slumber that would only lead me to more dreams of this life waiting to be explored even more…

Was there a mix of melancholy with grace that you would notice on my face if you saw me that day? Just as color seems so vibrant in the company of grey, and the road goes on and on with subtle rolling hills while those crops are watered with tears of compassion. And it wasn’t hard to make mention of the otherwise mundane trees that would shed more depth from the light which was absent up until now. I’d fancy this view even more if you’d answer your door just as the sun setting colors are knocking on those clouds to show the true beauty behind their endless textures. And here comes the clearing just from the east, and the breeze from the west felt so refreshing. I’ve been away for so long, searching for the meaning of things that don’t seem to have much meaning these days. And all I had to do was pull over and close my eyes, hearing your voice in a memory so vivid. How fond I’ve become to remember a summer season’s sentiments while winter still falls upon me. And when I saw this view while I thought of you, I knew it was time to come home soon…
